Precision irrigation scheduling: Integration of new technologies

We need to irrigate more in response to the long-term trend toward hotter, drier summers, and also to boost yields to feed a growing population. More accurate irrigation is needed to provide the regular supplies of high quality fresh produce demanded by consumers. However, water supplies are under pressure from all sides, and growers need to use water in a more effi cient and intelligent way. Precision irrigation often requires much effort and expertise, and this can be a barrier to grower uptake. There are continual developments in communications and sensor technologies, and also in our understanding of soil and plant processes. This workshop will focus on how we can use these advances to develop more accurate and easy-to-use scheduling systems.
