The initial water abstraction group was originally set up in 2011 and started life as the Herefordshire Water Abstraction Group (HWAG). The aim was to bring together local abstractors and give them a focal point for information, potential changes and advice regards licencing issues. The format was informal with members attending various meetings set up with the NFU and local groups concerned with the local rivers network.
Recently, due in part to the issues surrounding the local rivers (The Wye in particular) a more formal abstraction group has been discussed in order to represent abstractors in meetings with the Environment Agency and other parties.
From an initial conversation during 2024 with Water Resources West (WRW, Richard Blackwell) and subsequent meetings with Sarah Faulkner (Faulkner & Maine) the beginnings of a formal abstraction group are taking shape.
Hopefully, along with the formation of other localised abstractor groups, we can start to have meaningful discussions about sustainable water storage and water security with the relevant authorities.
