Assessing and managing drought risk

Irrigated farming enterprises need to evaluate whether their existing business models for aligning water resources availability to cropping plans are resilient to future water shocks such as drought and changes in water allocations. This is where D-Risk comes in.

D-Risk is a tool that enables farmers and grower to assess long-term risks of having enough water to meet future cropping plans taking account of annual weather and abstraction licence conditions.

requires only limited farm information relating to location, typical cropped areas and irrigation plans, soil types, abstraction licence information, and any reservoir storage. It uses that information to  carry out long-term water balance calculations that compare farm irrigation demands with annual and daily volumetric licence limits and (if applicable) reservoir storage.
